Millions of people across the U.S. are affected by mental health issues, and many—if not most—of those people feel alone in their struggles. Just like you, they go to work/school, interact with family and friends, and juggle all of the responsibilities of life, all without any professional help and often without even making their struggle known to anyone. In fact, at least 1/5 of people (both adults and children) in this country battle mental health problems, and at least 5% of adults are dealing with a serious mental illness. For disadvantaged populations, the numbers are even more concerning. At least 1/3 mixed/multiracial adults and almost 1/3 of all lesbian, gay, or bisexual adults struggle with mental illness.
Most Don't Get the Help They Need
Unfortunately, most people don't get the help they need, even right here in the Bay Area. Sadly, whether it's due to the perceived stigma of counseling or the perceived lack of affordable therapy, most people (roughly 55%) who have a mental health issue never seek treatment. Furthermore, even when people do seek treatment, the average delay between the onset of mental health symptoms and the beginning of treatment is more than a decade. That's more than 10 years of needless suffering!
For racial minorities in particular, the likelihood of receiving treatment for a mental health issue is even smaller. While roughly 50% of white adults with a mental health diagnosis will seek treatment, that number falls to 43% for multiracial adults, 34% for Hispanic adults, 33% for Black adults, and just 23% for Asian adults.
Mental Illness Affects Everyone
Anyone who has seen a loved one suffer from a mental health issue knows that mental health doesn't just affect that individual. In fact, more than 8 million Americans care for someone who suffers from emotional or mental illness. Furthermore, mental health sufferers also have an increased risk for other health problems that require care, including chronic diseases and substance abuse disorders, which require loved ones to devote even more time and energy to caring for the sufferer.
In our community, more than 20% of homeless adults suffer from mental illness, and almost 40% of people incarcerated in state and federal prisons have been diagnosed with a mental condition. Even more alarmingly, roughly 70% of kids who are in juvenile detention centers suffer from a mental health condition.
