I am a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor and I have been independently licensed and actively practicing since 2009. I have a Master of Arts in Professional Counseling from Ottawa University. This was an in-person degree program specifically geared to adult professionals who were already in the field. I consider myself to be very lucky to have learned from some of my mentors in the field. I joined the professional counseling field because I have the gift of seeing good in others. This has helped me to see the worst moments in people’s lives and to still believe that they have a part of them that is strong enough to reach towards healing. This allows me to be there with you as you walk through your most challenging moments. I naturally try to see any situation from your perspective, while also understanding that sometimes we don’t see the situation clearly when we are too close to it. This helps me have a greater understanding of why clients might struggle in parts of their lives, while they are successful in other areas of their life.
My favorite thing about working as a counselor is helping people to see their inner strengths while also validating their needs. Watching people grow through balancing these two parts of themselves has been my favorite part of the process. Since I began my career in the community mental health systems, I have had the experience of working with a variety of clients with many different diagnoses. This has allowed me to identify themes in your story and to help you to develop a unique treatment plan.
When working with clients, I use a more eclectic approach that starts with a person-centered approach guided by the belief that you are the expert in your own life. Today, I work with mostly adult clients and some adolescents who have symptoms of depression, anxiety, relationship distress, trauma, and who are struggling with life changes. I also have worked with adults and teenagers with borderline personality disorder symptoms using dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT). I have training and experience in applying DBT skills using individual, group, and telehealth settings. I even use these skills as a foundation to help clients prepare to handle the potential intensity of EMDR treatment. I have also been successful in using EMDR to treat military trauma, childhood trauma and single incident traumas. I also work with families formed through adoption. With these families, I work with them to face the challenges which can come from the interruption of childhood attachment and in creating a secure family structure. Finally, I work closely with the LGBTQ community to support them on their unique struggles with internal and external challenges.
If these are some of the issues you face, read on to see if I might be a good fit for you.
My life philosophy is that we are all here to learn something about ourselves and the world around us. I think that we all grow from our own mistakes and can even grow from the mistakes of others. This helps me to see life’s challenges as difficult, but not unmanageable. I have seen people who have overcome enormous obstacles and continue to learn and grow. I apply this principle in my work with clients. The most profound thing I have learned is that people sometimes have the answers within them, and in these cases, I am just the mechanism to help them see their own truth. This helps me to work with my clients instead of pushing or pulling them. I believe that humans are doing the best they can in a difficult world. I believe that we all have things to learn in this life and some lessons will repeat themselves until we “get it.” I believe that every person has in them a part of them that wants to do better, be healthier and to live better. This drives me to work with those whose lives are tattered and torn and to help them see the way to put the pieces back together, often with a better design your community of choice through exercises of connection building a strong and trusting relationship with clients is one of the most valuable pieces of therapy. As a therapist, my main focus is to create an atmosphere of trust and respect by practicing empathy and a deep sense of acceptance. I strongly work on validating clients' feelings to each and every situation presented in session. Together we work on identifying unique ways to strengthen their skills, explore hopes and values and work towards the process of healing.
For the past 10 years, I have had the opportunity to work together with those who seek professional help when they feel stuck in life or when certain symptoms interfere with their daily lives. I have had the pleasure of working together as a team with them and do my best to guide them towards a road of recovery to be able to live life with intention and be the best version of themselves.
Prior to joining Quick Results Counseling, I was a therapist at a local mental health agency where I obtained so much experience working with youth and young adults, children and adults of all ages. I also worked at the local Crisis Unit helping those with immediate need of psychiatric assistance. For the past 4 years I supervised a Full Service Partnership program where we served the severely mentally ill. We assisted the local homeless population and we provided a large range of assistance for them and their families. The funds provided to clients who met the criteria for immediate need were offered help to pay their rent, bills, food, children's school supplies, clothing for the entire family, or any other items they needed to get them started into the road of recovery. These years were full of satisfaction, gratitude and wonderful memories as we were able to help our community in so many ways. I recently left this local mental health agency and have started to build my own private practice along with working with QRC. I specialize in several areas such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder, self-esteem, grief, stress-management, relationship issues, self-empowerment amongst others. I am certified in several evidence based models such as CBT, CPT, DBT, IPT, and MI. However, my goal in therapy is to start where my client is. I utilize several clinical skills that target clients presenting problems and their desired goals in therapy. I look forward working with you and together build a positive therapeutic relationship which will bring positive changes to your life.
